An honest guide

How to choose a chiropractor on the Sunshine Coast

There are dozens of chiropractors between Caloundra and Noosa, and the differences between them are real. Here's what actually matters when you're choosing. It's written by a clinic that's obviously not neutral, but the list is honest enough to be useful anywhere.

1. Check registration first

Every practising chiropractor in Australia must be registered with AHPRA, the national regulator. It takes thirty seconds to confirm at ahpra.gov.au: search the register for the practitioner's name and check for conditions on their registration. Any clinic will tell you who you'd be seeing before you book; if getting a name feels difficult, that's an answer in itself.

2. Expect an examination before any treatment

A practitioner who starts adjusting before taking a history and examining you is guessing. The first visit should involve questions about your health beyond the sore spot, physical testing, and an explanation you can repeat back in your own words. This is the single most reliable quality signal there is.

3. Be wary of the prepaid program

Some clinics sell long treatment packages: dozens of visits, paid upfront, sometimes for the whole family, before any response to treatment has been seen. The Chiropractic Board's guidance is clear that care should be reviewed against progress. A schedule that never changes regardless of how you feel isn't a plan; it's a subscription. Reasonable question to ask any clinic, ours included: "how will we know it's working, and what happens if it isn't?"

4. Ask how imaging decisions get made

X-rays are clinically valuable when the history or examination raises a specific question, and unnecessary as a routine sales step. Ask when the clinic images and why. (Our answer: at Mooloolaba we have an on-site low-dose digital suite and use it for a defined list of indications; most new patients are never X-rayed at all. The list is here.)

5. Notice what happens when you're not a chiropractic case

Good practitioners refer. Backs with progressive neurological signs, suspicious histories or problems that plainly belong with a GP, physiotherapist or specialist should leave the clinic with a referral, not another appointment. Clinics where every presentation turns out to need chiropractic care are telling you something.

6. Convenience counts more than people admit

The best treatment plan is the one you actually finish, and on a region as spread out as the Sunshine Coast, a clinic forty minutes away quietly kills follow-through. Check the drive, the parking and the Saturday situation before you commit. (It's why we run two clinics, coast and hinterland, rather than one big one.)

7. Read reviews for patterns, not stars

Any clinic can collect five-star ratings. Read the text instead and look for repeated specifics: do people mention being listened to, having things explained, getting better, being told when treatment wasn't needed? A hundred reviews that repeat the same concrete observations beat a perfect score built on "great service".
